In 1985, Toronto became a baseball contender for the first time by clinching a playoff spot. Two years later in 1987, Toronto nearly made the playoffs, but on the last weekend of the season, they lost the division by two games to Detroit.
In 1989, the team moved to their new home and went back to the playoffs.
By 1991, there was a different vibe in Toronto. That summer the city hosted the All Star Game, they were back in the playoffs and attendance was just north of 4,000,000 fans.
The team and city were ready to bring a championship north of the border.
In 1992 and 1993, Toronto won back to back World Championships, having two of the most iconic rosters in baseball history. These two teams united a country and captured the imagination of Canadian fans.
From the upside down flag in 1992, to ‘Touch ‘Em All Joe’ in 1993, the baseball World Championship finally came to Canada and their success still resonates deeply with Canadian baseball fans today.
