Description
Did you know that the most iconic baseball player of the 20th century started his legacy in Toronto?
Before hitting 714 Major League home runs, on September 5, 1914, the 19-year-old “Southside Phenom” showed signs of greatness as he hit his first professional home run over the rightfield fence at Hanlan Point Stadium on the Toronto Island.
The ball was never located leading many to believe it is the most valuable lost treasure in modern baseball.
The future Hall of Famer was also the starting pitcher, allowing only one hit and striking out seven batters. In that game, the Providence Grays beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 9-0.
A historic plaque commemorating the home run is currently located at Hanlan’s Point in Toronto, Ontario.
